TIPS - Why more men are putting their children ahead of their careers

Why more men are putting their children ahead of their careers

As Dan Jarvis declines to enter the Labour leader race because he wants to be there for his children – Harry Wallop talks to other men on the 'daddy track' who are putting their families first

There is already one winner to have emerged from the race to be the next Labour leader: Dan Jarvis. The 42-year-old, despite his relative inexperience, was a leading candidate. Not only is he ruggedly telegenic, he has an arresting back story: an ex-Para, decorated for his service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his wife died five years ago, leaving him to bring up his two young children. He remarried in 2013 and has had another child.

But within days of the election catastrophe for Labour he announced he would not stand. “'My eldest kids had a very tough time when they lost their mum and I don't want them to lose their dad. I need some space for them, my wife and our youngest child right now, and I wouldn't have it as leader.”
