Postdoctoral Research Associate in Geophysics

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the NERC funded project “Role and extent of detachment faulting at slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges”.

This collaborative research project has Project Partners at the Universities of Birmingham and Cardiff and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and will investigate the processes of oceanic crustal accretion at slow spreading rates, in particular the role played by large-offset normal “detachment” faults in the formation of oceanic core complexes at 13N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

As part of the project an extensive geophysical dataset will be acquired during a cruise on the research vessel James Cook to 13N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in Jan-Feb 2016. The post-holder will be expected to participate in this research cruise and, subsequently, analyse and interpret the 3D ocean-bottom seismograph wide-angle, controlled-source seismic data acquired, together with the coincident gravity and magnetic profiles.

The primary focus of this post will be to determine the geometry and extent of surface observable features at depth, using P- and S-wave 3D-volume velocity models, to reveal how detachments relate to magmatic accretion in time and space. The results of this research will be integrated with those of in-parallel studies of local seismicity and multichannel seismic crustal imaging being undertaken by our collaborators.

National Hedgehog Survey Volunteers

The Western European hedgehog is widely believed to have undergone a marked decline in Britain in the last few decades. As a result, the species has been highlighted as being of conservation concern. Studies are, therefore, urgently required to identify the current distribution of the species, to determine factors affecting this distribution and to serve as a baseline against which future changes can be compared.
Consequently, the University of Reading and Nottingham Trent University, in collaboration with the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), are conducting a National Hedgehog Survey in 2014 and 2015. To complete this survey, we are looking to enlist the help of volunteers to survey designated sites across England and Wales using footprint-tunnels
Please note that this survey requires a commitment to monitor 10 tunnels over five consecutive nights in a 1km square that will be allocated to you; you will also need one extra day to arrange your survey with landowners.
We are particularly keen to get sites in Wales, Cornwall, Norfolk, Devon, Northumberland, Northamptonshire and Yorkshire surveyed.

John Muir Award Project Manager

The John Muir Award, the main engagement initiative of the John Muir Trust, is a leading environmental award scheme focused on wild places. With funding support from Scottish Natural Heritage and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority, we are recruiting a Scotland Project Manager as part of an existing staff team to promote and develop the John Muir Award throughout Scotland. This will be a one year fixed term full-time post (with anticipated continued funding).
The post-holder will manage and increase John Muir Award activity in Scotland, primarily with schools but also through the informal education sector. The role will be part of a team meeting specific Scottish Natural Heritage and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park targets, and developing further links with the Scottish curriculum and learning sector.
Applicants must have 2 years project management experience in a relevant role, demonstrate understanding of formal and informal education systems in Scotland and have experience of working effectively with volunteers and young people. Links with environmental and outdoor learning approaches would be desirable
