It's not what you think...
Your final year of University circles around you
finishing your dissertation and passing your exams, hopefully you leave with a
good grade to land that all important mind blowing, amazing job that you’ve
been dreaming about. You spend hours and sleepless nights going over (and over)
your dissertation to make sure it is perfect, and as your final exams approach,
sleeping becomes a luxury...
The saying “work hard and play hard”, becomes the
motto of your third year, on your mission to get the grades that will land you
the dream job.
Going back two years, when you think about first
year of University what mostly comes to mind is “fresher’s week” meeting new
people, partying, staying out late enjoying the student life only to wake up
for a 9am lecture on a Monday (god I hated those 9am starts). But you'll
roll out of bed and attend those lectures because, they are to prepare you with
the skills and knowledge you'll need to progress through university.
In the second year things get more serious,
suddenly the work load starts to increase and everything you do in this year
will reflect your third year.
Your aim now, is to smash all your coursework and
exams because that is the only way you’re going to get that dream job that is
waiting for you.
Quite simple really; work hard get the grades and
the job will come!
You believe that once you have your degree, a
well put together CV and a some experience working with people, you'll be more
employable; that isn't always true!
Upon finishing third year with my 2:1, as the
weeks went by it suddenly dawned on me that I wasn’t properly prepared for what
the real world had to offer. My belief of achieving a 2:1, having a well put
together CV didn’t seem to matter much to employers.
You might start to lack self-belief and to feel
like you’re whole world is crumbling and feel that nobody understands the
emotional turmoil you're going through. This is normal. The best advice I can
give you is not to panic - everyone has been through this vicious cycle!
