Students think finding a job 'is impossible', survey finds

Half of university students think finding a job they like will be either ‘challenging’ or 'impossible' as pessimism doubles in two years

Half of university students think finding a job they like will be either ‘challenging’ or 'impossible' as pessimism doubles in two years due to effects of financial crisis, a new survey finds.

Two years ago, 23 per cent of those surveyed felt it was “challenging” to get a job versus 40 per cent this year. Separately, in 2013, 2 per cent said it was “impossible” to get a job compared to 8 per cent in 2015.

Conducted by the National Union of Students’ Services Research Department, the Unite Students Insight Report surveyed over 8,500 university applicants, students and postgraduates

Jenny Shaw, Unite Students head of Higher Education engagement and student services, said: “Students in 2015 have grown up through the financial crisis and many have seen the effect on their families.

“Despite the rise in job concerns, getting a degree is still great protection against unemployment.”
