Getting experience without experience
How do you get a job when you don’t have experience and experience when you don't have a job, Steve Rook gives advice to students this summer
The eternal career dilemma is getting a job when
you don’t have experience and experience when you don't have a job. Over recent
years this catch-22 has become especially challenging for university students
for a multitude of reasons.
For starters, current students and graduates are
facing an increasingly diverse job market, skills and experience have become
ever more central to the recruitment process, and the recession has heralded
fewer student opportunities but greater graduate expectations.
However, there is good news. There are still
numerous opportunities to get the experience and attributes you require, you
just need to be creative and take control of your career journey.
Assess all your options – Step back and see what’s out there
Mainstream vacancies: Make sure
you know where and when the larger recruiters in your chosen sector advertise
their jobs, for example, many graduate schemes open in the autumn, to start the
following year.
