PhD Scholarship in Population Genetics (eDNA)
Technical University of Denmark - Marine
A PhD Scholarship in
Population Genetics (eDNA) is available at the National Institute of Aquatic
Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date October 2015. The project will be
carried out in affiliation to the Section for Marine Living Resources’
population genetics research group in Silkeborg, Denmark. DTU Aqua is an
institute at the DTU.
Project description Monitoring programs targeting commercial fish species and other key aquatic organisms are an important element in understanding the ecosystem dynamics and for implementing an effective management policy. Many classical marine monitoring programs are highly labour intensive, selective and costly to implement across large geographic regions. However, recent technological developments take advantage of water samples to potentially rapidly assess entire biological communities across taxonomic groups by retrieving bulk DNA and characterizing species composition using genetic ‘bar-coding’. It is predicted that this approach can become a significant supplement and advancement to how aquatic monitoring programs are conducted today. |

This unique project is run out of a newly
established research facility on the north side of Utila, the smallest of the
Bay Islands in Honduras. Located about two miles outside the only town, it is
surrounded by tropical broad leaf forest, just a few hundred feet from the
crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Forming part of the Mesoamerican
Barrier Reef System, the second largest in the world, Utila is growing
rapidly as a diving and tourist destination.
This growth threatens the islands delicate
eco-systems and has lead to one endemic species of black spiny tailed iguana
to be listed in the IUCN red list and on CITES appendix 2 as a critically
endangered species. In addition, the island of Utila has received very little
attention from the academic world, and is rife with under-studied flora and
fauna, as well as suspected new species waiting to be discovered and
researched.
